Twenty-Four

Queen Serephine

“We can’t wait any longer,” I say to Rahmirus, our children, and the mages in our throne room. “It’s been hours.”

Sarzarath and Ekath seem to be faring well in their battle, but they still need our help.

“I don’t think you should either,” Brakaz says. “Queth will find out soon now anyway. So what if it’s now?”

Her siblings mirror her sentiments, and in all honesty, they have been encouraging us to leave since they woke an hour ago.

“What of the feeling to stay here?” Vantha asks. “Can you leave?”

I nod. “The feeling left us a little while ago.”

“Then I say, go cause Hell.”

Rahmirus looks to the doors. “I guess our time of hiding in our world is over, My Queen.” He takes my hand. “We’ll take you all to Zurion first,” he says to our mages and our children. “And you are not to leave.”

“Very well,” they all reply.

We take them to our lair in Zurion, telling them again that they are all to stay here together until we return, and while they swear they will, I notice how even calmer this realm feels now that our combined energy has affected it.

It truly could be Zion in Hell…

“Be careful,” Thagen tells us when his father and I kneel to say goodbye.

“We will, but do not worry,” I say as I give them all strength with a kiss to their fiery heads. “We’ll return when we can, but in the meantime, listen to our mages. They will protect you here.”

“We will,” Belvia says. “Worry not of us.”

I nod as I stand with Rahmirus and armor myself with him, but then when Nekrasi offers us our cloaking potions, we decline them.

“Hell can feel our union now, so to cloak is pointless.”

“Are you sure?” she asks, surprised.

I look at Rahmirus, hearing him mirror my thoughts on the matter. “It’s about time we showed our faces to our enemy.”

“Do you think he’ll be there?” Yova asks.

“Queth?”

She nods.

“We hope he will be,” Rahmirus answers her, “but who knows.”

“Keep us informed of what’s going on,” Nekrasi says. “We’ll stay in contact with Sarzarath and Ekath too.”

“We will.” I turn to Rahmirus. ‘Ready?’

His eyes alight as he remembers our hours spent making love and how we spoke of our excitement during them. ‘More than.’

I smile in response. “Then let us go.”

We arrive in Vrakeriale’s city, to a scene of burning buildings, intermittent explosions, and thick smog in the air. The fighting here doesn’t seem to have calmed even a little since it began, and it’s clear that it will continue for some time yet.

Even if Sarzarath does appear to be winning.

I behead a passerby with Death’s Edge and then set another group on fire. “At least we haven’t missed all the fun.” I slit another man's throat and watch him bleed out onto the sand.

That makes my heart race, but so does watching Rahmirus easily beheading Griamenians in his stride.

“We should find Sarzarath and Ekath,” I suggest.

Or I might just sneak off with him into one of the many burning huts that surround us.
